Throughout 45 years of experience in providing allied health care career training, our mission has remained focused on providing quality education to benefit students, graduates, and health care professionals.
The St. Louis, MO location of the Vet Tech Institute has a reputation that has attracted students from around the state. Students benefit from this diversity and also are among peers who share their love for animals. Vet Tech Institute at Hickey College is located in St. Louis and has convenient access to public transportation, parking, and recreation.

For the last reporting year*, Hickey College’s graduation rate was 70.0%.  Of those graduates, 97.1% graduated within the normal time for the program. This high rate reflects our committed faculty, hands-on curriculum, and accelerated programs. Compare that number to community colleges graduation rates and you'll see the difference.

The U.S. Department of Education reports that, among first-time, full-time degree- or certificate-seekers attending community colleges:

-11.5% complete in the normal time

-22.0% complete within 150% of the normal time

-28.4% complete within 200% of the normal time.

Further, among bachelor’s degree-seeking students who start full time for the first time at public, 4-year colleges, 29.9% graduate within four years and 54.9% graduate within six years **.

Vet Tech Institute at Hickey College Faculty Members Include:



Angela Scherer, D.V.M., graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness.  She received a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Veterinary Medicine.   Dr. Scherer completed a Small Animal Medicine and Surgery Internship at Veterinary Specialty Services in St. Louis, Missouri.   In 2002, she began a Small Animal Surgery Residency at Veterinary Specialty Services in St. Louis, Missouri.  Dr. Scherer has also worked in private practice and joined the Vet Tech Institute at Hickey College as the Program Director.

 

Elizabeth Cook, RVT, graduated from Concordia University-Wisconsin  with a Bachelor of Art in Parish Music.  She went on to complete her Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology at Madison Area Technical College.  She has worked as a veterinary technician assistant for Lodi Veterinary Hospital, a certified veterinary technician at The Veterinary Specialty Hospital of the Carolinas (VSH), and as a registered veterinary technician at Kingsbury Animal Hospital. Mrs. Cook joined the staff of the Vet Tech Institute at Hickey College and teaches courses in Veterinary Medical Terminology, Animal Technology, and Clinical Medicine.  Her experience in both specialty and general practice has given her a variety of skills that she can pass on to her students. 

 

Jason Davis, DVM, obtained a Bachelor of Science in Animal Sciences and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Missouri.  Prior to obtaining his Doctorate, Dr. Davis worked in small animal private practices in St. Louis and Columbia, Missouri.  Dr. Davis is a member of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association.

 

Courtney Frey, RVT, graduated as Magnum cum Laude from Northern Virginia Community College with an Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology.  She also obtained a Bachelor Degree in English from the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia.  Courtney has worked at the Oakton-Vienna Veterinary Hospital, The Hope Center for Veterinary Medicine Emergency Department  in Vienna, Virginia and most recently at Associated Veterinary Specialists in St. Louis, Missouri.

Robin Graham, RVT, graduated with honors from the Vet Tech Institute at Hickey College with a Veterinary Technician Associate Degree.  She helped implement the Student Chapter National Association of Veterinary Technician’s in America (SCNAVTA) at the college and served as the first class president.  Ms. Graham previously worked at Veterinary Specialty Services and joined the Vet Tech Institute where she is an instructor and Kennel Manager teaching courses in Animal Technology and Anatomy and Physiology. 

 

Andrea Kohnen, RVT, graduated from Lincoln Memorial University with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science with a concentration in Business. She teaches courses in Clinical Pathology and Clinical Medicine and is the Student Council Advisor at the Vet Tech Institute at Hickey College.  Along with the students, she helped develop the SCNAVTA program for the college. She worked at Horseshoe Lake Animal Hospital as a technician prior to working at Hickey College.  Her clinical experience has aided her in developing laboratory and communication skills required to be a successful veterinary technician.

 

Maggie Lauer, RVT, graduated from Jefferson College with an Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology and passed her national and state board exams to become a registered veterinary technician in Missouri. During her 2 years at Jefferson College she was the class president of the Student Chapter National Association of Veterinary Technician’s in America (SCNAVTA). She started her career as a veterinary assistant at the Red Bud Veterinary Clinic. Once she received her license she obtained a job at the Warrenton Veterinary Clinic. Mrs. Lauer now enjoys teaching students in Clinical Laboratory and Surgical Nursing classes from her experience working in a clinic setting.

 

Amanda Leslie, CVT, graduated from Parkland Community College in Champaign, Illinois with an Associate Degree in Veterinary Science.  Amanda worked at the Highland Pet Hospital and Wellness Center in Bloomington, Illinois and the Bloomington, Illinois Animal Emergency Clinic before coming to work at the Vet Tech Institute at Hickey College.

 

Lindsey McNamara, RVT, graduated with honors from the Vet Tech Institute at Hickey College where she received a Specialized Associate Degree as a Veterinary Technician.  Lindsey is currently the Kennel Manager at the Vet Tech Institute at Hickey College.  She completed her externship at Hermann Veterinary Clinic in Hermann, Missouri and has worked at O’Fallon Veterinary Medical Center in O’Fallon, Missouri.

  

Naomi Whitt, RVT, received a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and a Master of Science in Agriculture from Murray State University. Naomi also has obtained Certificates of Completion in Wildlife Care, Advanced Feeding and Nutrition, and Basic Wildlife Rehabilitation.  She worked at Murray Animal Hospital and Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky before coming to work at the Vet Tech Institute.

Deborah Wilson, RVT, graduated from Columbia State Community College with an Associate degree in Veterinary Technology in 1981.  She has over 25 years of clinical experience, with the last ten of those years at Veterinary Specialty Services in Manchester, MO.  Ms. Wilson is a Missouri Master Naturalist and a dog agility enthusiast.  She teaches courses in Clinical Medicine, Pharmacology, Radiography, and Animal Technology.  Ms. Wilson has professional affiliations with the Missouri Veterinary Technician Association, National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, and the Association of Veterinary Technician Educators.
